seeing Richard Samuels on the big screen

Here’s the first entry of our guest VABN blogger, Grace. She attended the premiere screening of Zac Efron’s “Me and Orson Welles” at the TIFF.

I watched the premiere Premiere of Me and Orson Welles last night and I can vouch first hand that this is a well-crafted film with sold plot lines and character development. The people who watched the film is not your typical teenage girls screaming their hearts out, though there were a couple of them outside the theatre before and after the show, wanting to have an autograph. The crowd who were inside the theatre came from a wide demographic but typically professionals ranging from late 20s to 50s. The theatre was packed as people were lining up hours outside the theatre to get good seats.

Before the start of the movie, the director, Richard Linklater and the two casts, Claire Danes and Zac Efron spoke briefly to the audience. During the short introduction, Claire and Zac admitted that this is their first time to see the entire movie; thus they will also be watching it with us (they did).

The movie took almost 2 hours and can I say – it was a cinematic delight. The movie relied on the sheer acting talents of all its stars, principally the acting of Christian McKay who played the colossal sized ego of Orson Welles. Zac played the role of young Richard who saw and experienced up close the production of Welles’ Julius Caesar in Mercury Theatre. Claire plays the role of charming and ambitious Sonja with wit and confidence. All the other supporting casts in the theatre group gave memorable performances as well.

During the movie, the audience laughed and cheered at the light moments of the film, which provided contrasts to the high drama of the character of Orson Welles. Christian McKay played the role of Orson Welles with so much energy and passion; it was his acting that electrified the audience. The movie is a visual delight with the 1937 costumes and setting; the 1940’s music provided the feel of the time.

At the end of the movie, the director and principal casts, Claire Danes, Zac Efron and Christian McKay went up to the stage to the cheers and applause of the audience. During the question and answer portion, Zac said that he was happy to finally have a serious role in MAOW. He said that this was different for him; and educational to be acting along side Claire Danes and Christian McKay. He was also asked how he felt seeing this face in the big screen and he said it was weird but he is getting used to it by now (this is his second film).

Having seen Zac in HSM 1 and 2, I was pleasantly surprise to see Zac portray a young sensitive soul experiencing life in the theatre and coming to grips with the realities of life. I saw charm and innocence as well as emotions of pain, anger and disappointment in his portrayal of young Richard. I thought it was a good choice of role for him to break out from musical films into the direction of serious acting. An avid HSM teen moviegoer can still relate to him as he plays a romantic and idealist teen experiencing life’s adventures. His character sings a bit in the play too.

Also, this kind of role exposes Zac to an older and more matured crowd. A middle-aged woman who sat beside me asked what other movie Zac is in. I suppose a lot of these people have not watched HSM or Hairspray. With a warm reception after this night, these people will see Zac more than just his Adonis like features. They will see and appreciate Zac, the actor.

On the lighter note, in the big screen, seeing Zac’s handsome face was surreal. His eyes are so expressive. He looks gorgeous too in real life.

maybe is random write this here..but hey, is about zac :)

some people is saying that he seems ackward in the red carpet pics…and some other people is saying that he appears like he appears when he is with vanessa. well, my opinion, and i’d said it before, is that he didn’t show the same smile that he “wears” when he appears with vanessa. you only have to see the tca’s pics and these pics…i think vanessa is the clue here: she calms him and with her he is more himself cause it seems that they are in a private bubble…

zac looks more handsome (and no, i am not talking about if he is hot or not), i am talking about his features, smile, look…when he is with vanessa. his smile talks by itself…

well, at least this is my opinion :P

Irene, I completely agree with you.
He just has this special “Vanessa smile”, you know.
    Guess that’s what love does.
And he’s probably gonna have it tommorow at the VMA’s.
They’re gonna be soo happy to see each other.
Their love just shows, you know. I love his “Vanessa smile”.
He looks so incredibly happy when he’s with her. It’s as if the world doesn’t even excist anymore. As if they’re the only 2 people there.

  3. Malia says:

Well, so far all of the reviews that I’ve read except one have been very positive in regards to Zac’s acting abilities. I’m sure Zac will be extremely pleased with the reviews. I mean, this is the first dramatic role anyone has seen him in.

Plus, all the attention that Christian McKay is bringing to the movie, will persuade more people to see it. Which means more people will be introduced to Zac. And that’s good.

  4. Magie says:

Yay! I wanted to say thank you Grace for sharing your experience of this movie! I am really eagar to see it as I have read the book and loved it. I can’t wait to see Zac finally carry a film and outside of his usual realm of contstant singing and dancing. Good to hear the movie is nothing but great, thanks again for your insight.

And I will admit I am jealous you got to be in the same room with Zac, that in its self would be a treat and then a great movie on top of that! :)

  5. Malia says:

I certainly HOPE that Zac and Vanessa are more secure in their relationship than some of you young girls are. This event for Zac is WORK. He is working here to promote a movie he did. Do you really think he’s walking around thinking how much he misses Vanessa? And that he’s NOT SMILING because Vanessa is not there? Live in the real work for a few minutes here and think about it. He IS smiling in lots of the pictures, and I’m sure he’s more focused on what people watching the movie will be thinking than on his very secure girlfriend who is doing her own gig half-way across the country.

Do you think while Vanessa’s WORKING–performing on stage in her concert, her mind is on Zac and how much she’s missing him every single minute?

A resounding NO!!! They are working.

  6. Magie says:

Ah, should have read the posts before I did a reply, but this your description of the film caught my eye. First off sad face :( at the film not being narrated by Richard, I was really kinda hoping to hear Zac’s voice for a good hour-ish :P Ahh, the second thing I was gonna say could ruin it, damn! Oh well I am just hoping they stay as true to the book as possible, again thanks for your review!

–and someone asked about V’s concert, I had a friend who went to it and she said that she was really good, and looked gorgeous. Also it was a pretty big crowd, I know that isn’t a lot but thought some might enjoy it.

  7. ZanessaSupporter says:

Malia, why are you being so harsh.
Irene and I were just giving our opinion.
Do you really think that we think Zac is think about Vanessa the whole time. That’s not what we meant. It’s not impossible for him to miss Vanessa. And I’m sorry but I was just giving my opinion.
I was just saying that I love his Vanessa smile. And I’m 100% sure that I’m not the only one thinking that. I’m not saying his whole life revolves around Vanessa. But I think She’s a big part of it. So how do You know that he’s not thinking of her. You can’t read his mind, can you. Not to be mean, but you always take things the wrong way and your comments are really harsh sometimes. I didn’t know you would get so upset about this.

  8. Malia says:

#26 Magie, you know, when I first read the book, I could see Richard narrating it. Sort of like The Great Gatsby, with Nick Carraway telling the story.

But, I don’t think that would appeal to today’s audiences. In MAOW, Richard’s thoughts will have to be conveyed by his body language and facial expressions and the way he says his lines.

  9. Chay says:

please keep this about the movie, Zac’s performance and Grace’s experience… no mention of Vanessa please; she wasn’t there; she’s not in the movie so no reason for her to be mention here.

    thanks.

  10. Malia says:

#27 ZanessaSupporter, it wasn’t my intention to be harsh. But, it would be nice to have one Zac post in which we could really discuss his work and not have you guys expressing the SAME insecurities that you’ve posted about so many times before.

  11. ZanessaSupporter says:

    I’m sorry Malia.
    I didn’t know that.
I don’t post here very often, you know.
And TBH what I said weren’t insecurities, I truly belive what I said. And belive me I’m not the kind of fan who thinks Zac’s whole life revolves around V and he shouldn’t do anything other that doesn’t revolve around her. That’s just pathetic and not healthy. But on topic now
I’ve heard some pretty good reviews. I’m really proud of him. And the reviews on Christian were incredibly good!!! I can’t wait to see it.

  12. irene says:

sorry malia…i’ve started this “vanessa comment”… :S i didn’t pretend to be focused on their relationship…i didn’t know where write my opinion and i did here cause it’s a zac post…but hey, no problems here, only a pair of things :)

if you read some of my posts, you can see how i defend those 2 like individuals, and how i defend the idea of them fooling the paps before think about a break up. i love the zanessa concept, but i always say that they are 2 people and each one of them has work, and an individual life…so is understatable that she can’t be with him 24/7..and viceversa. so no, i am not an immature fan who only is thinking about their relationship: i am 25, i’ve had long relationships and i know how they work…so this whole concept “if don’t appear pics of them together in a while they’ are not together” doesn’t fit it my mind, like also don’t fit in my mind think about them like a couple 24/7. i’ve always said that i am a vanessa fan and a zanessa fan..i like zac but my adoration here goes to vanessa 100% :P

sorry again malia (chay and other vabn girls); i won’t post something more about vanessa in a zac’swork post…but hey, in each post you write about vanessa, always appear something about zac so i can’t understand these differences….but the boss here are you, so i respect your opinion and i will try and obey you :)

    see yaaaaa and peaceeeeeeee!

Hey guys, new to this blog, found it by searching for reviews on MAOW.

I was a costume assistant on the Isle of Man portion of filming of MAOW. From what I saw first hand was brilliant acting ability by Zac and the rest of the cast. Christian McKay is a fantastic actor who is witty and makes people laugh constantly on set. His portrayal of Orson Welles was excellent, and he even stayed in character when the camera wasn’t rolling.
He was a genuine person and honestly a joy to work with, as was Zac.

I am so glad that the film has gotton good reviews as all the cast (and crew) fully deserve it for their efforts which were first class, as you (Grace, and hopefully the rest of you) will fully understand once you have seen the film.

I fully agree that this post should be about Zac, and his work only as it is a great achivement not to be ‘overshadowed’ or ‘overlooked’ by things not to do with MAOW.

    Lolly x

  14. Haley says:

I don’t normally post on this site but I don’t understand the controversy of saying Zac only looks comfortable on the red-carpet if he with Vanessa. Anyone can also see that he’s not really comfortable the general craziness that is the red-carpet and it’s probably easier to get through it when you are with someone who may have more patience for it than you. A lot of other actors (with more movie experience than Zac) generally hate the whole red-carpet thing and only do it if they absolutely have to. A few I can think of are Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington and Leonardo DiCapirio.

I don’t thing discussing other things overshadows Zac‘s achievement.
Noticing how bored Russell Crowe looks on the red-carpet, didn’t take away from his performance in Gladiator or Beautiful Mind.

  15. Grace says:

Hi Lolly, thanks for sharing your experience with us. It must have been an interesting work for you as you got to see the background scenes and preparation by cast and crew. I noticed the costume details of the cast particular Claire as she is a girl. But Richard seems to be wearing the same reddish pants and reddish plaid jacket the whole time. Overall it gave authenticity of the time period.

  16. Malia says:

Another great review of MAOW. Efron is terrific.

  17. Grace says:

From all the reviews I have read so far, it seems that the gamble by the producer in casting Zac, and Zac, for taking on this serious role, is paying off. So, you guys might get to enjoy this film early next year.

  18. christine says:

in the book there was a sex scene so did you see it on-screen or was there a scene that implied it?
